Charity Care, Discounts and Payment Arrangements

What if I Can't Pay My Bill? Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Center are proud of our mission to improve the health status of all people within our community, and to provide healthcare to all patients regardless of their ability to pay or their insurance status.

At Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Center, we understand that health care is expensive and often unexpected; paying for services is sometimes very difficult, especially if you don't have health insurance. If you are concerned that you might not be able to pay your bill, we have programs designed to help you.

Financial Assistance: Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Center have a financial assistance program to help our patients who don't have health insurance, or whose health insurance does not cover a medically necessary service.

This program provides a 100% discount for patients with total household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Uninsured patients with total household income above 200% but below 400% of the federal poverty level may also be eligible for a discount on their bill for medically necessary services.

Catastrophic Care Assistance: Regardless of your income level, if you are uninsured and your bill for medically necessary services is greater than 25% of your annual household income, Mary Washington Hospital and Stafford Hospital Center will provide a discount of up to 25% of your annual household income, with payment options.

Who Is Eligible for These Discounts? Patients who don't have health care insurance coverage, or have insurance coverage but have received a non-covered service, may qualify for these discounts. The amount of the discount depends on the level of family household income, number of dependents, and the amount of the bill. The discounts range from 20% to 100%. The discount doesn't apply to co-payments or deductibles.

How Do I Apply for a Discount? If you want assistance and think you qualify, please speak with one of our Financial Counselors. Please call 540.741.1435 or complete an application by clicking on the link below. Please file the application as directed in the instructions and a Financial Counselor will call to assist you.

You will need to apply for assistance within 30 days of receiving a bill for services provided. Our Financial Counselors may ask you for proof of income (pay stubs, etc). We also request that you work with us to access available government assistance programs.

What About the Rest of My Bill? You will need to pay the balance remaining on your bill, after any applied discount, in a timely manner. Our Financial Counselors will be happy to assist you with payment options.
